Managing Observation Feedback Effectively
This E-learning course comprises 5 elearning modules. It is designed to help you develop the knowledge and skills required to manage post learning session observation discussions so that they achieve a constructive outcome.
Course Learning Outcomes
On completion of the course participants should be able to describe and clearly explain:
- what observation feedback is designed to achieve and key aspects of the psychology of feedback
- the various communication skills involved in a feedback dialogue and their importance
- how to plan a feedback session
- what Direct Feedback, Dialogue Feedback, and Self Assessments discussion management techniques involve, and when their use is appropriate and when it is not
- the different methods (Layering, Sandwich, Thematic) that can be used to organise which specific judgements are discussed and when in a discussion.

Module 1 Purpose & Psychology Overview
This module will take you approximately 3 hours to complete.
This module looks at:
- what observation feedback is designed to achieve
- four key aspects of the psychology of feedback.

Module 2 Essential Feedback Skills Overview
This module will take you approximately 4 hours to complete.
This module looks at:
- what are appropriate feedback locations
- what an appropriate feedback discussion structure looks like
- a range of communication skills essential to effective feedback practice
- the importance of clear judgements and sufficiency of evidence in feedback
- how language supports or inhibits good feedback
- what part ground rules and etiquette can play in the process and the importance of vocal projection.

Module 3 Managing Tutors & Judgements Overview
This module will take you approximately 3 hours to complete.
This module will help you to plan a feedback session. It will look specifically at:
- determining the order judgements will be covered in
- methods and approaches to use
- how much evidence to use
- when and if to make improvement suggestions
- possible tutor reactions during feedback
- appropriate use of vocal emphasis
- when and where the feedback should take place.

Module 4 Direct & Dialogue Methods Overview
This module will take you approximately 2 hours to complete.
This module will look at what is required in order to deliver effective feedback using two specific techniques. The techniques are called:
- Direct Feedback approach
- and
- Dialogue Feedback approach.

Module 5 Self Assessment & Judgement Presentation Techniques Overview
This module will take you approximately 2.5 hours to complete.
This module will look at:
- what is required in order to deliver effective feedback using the Self Assessment technique
- how to use ‘Sandwich’, ‘Thematic’ and ‘Layering’ as ways of organising the key things that have to be discussed during a feedback session.
